Goondi SS Newsletter Week 2 Term 3
From the Principal
Dear parents and carers
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to our wonderful school community. My name is Melissa Wieland and I have been permanently appointed as the Principal of Goondi State School. I thank Ms Kaitara for her leadership and guidance over the past 18 months and wish her every success at her new placement.
A little about me…. I am an Innisfail local having attended both primary and secondary school here before heading off to university and securing my first teaching placement and then principal position at Georgetown State School. My family relocated back to the Innisfail area in 2016, purchasing a cattle and exotic fruit farm and my children all attended Goondi State School. I was the principal of Flying Fish Point State School and more recently Tully State School before relocating to Goondi to reduce the commute each day.
I am excited and enthusiastic to lead Goondi State School on our journey and having worked in the deputy role here in 2016 my vision is to ensure consistent school wide processes and systems that are aligned to our annual implementation plan to drive student improvement. Our work will focus on ensuring a seamless and smooth transition to version 9 of the Australian Curriculum and creating safe, inclusive and supporting practices for all students. I strongly believe in leading our school community to ‘Dare to Do Well’ by delivering quality learning opportunities for all students. I am proud of the strong reputation that Goondi SS has within the community and look forward to working with my leadership team to strengthen this further and deliver high academic results whilst promoting cultural and sporting pursuits for all students.
I value staff, student and parent voice and encourage all parents and community members to contact me with any queries you may have. My contact details are email mwiel4@eq.edu.au or principal@goondiss.eq.edu.au or mobile 0477 610 970. Alternatively, meetings can be arranged by contacting the office to schedule a suitable time.
Thank you for making me feel welcome.
Regards Melissa

Welcome back!
We hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe holiday. This term in Writing we are learning how to write information reports. We are learning all about farm animals and also the local crops that we grow in our community.
In Phonics our focus sounds for the fortnight are oi, oy, oo as in boot and oo as in foot. We will incorporate these sounds into our spelling practice as well. We are using our sound knowledge to help us read our decodables in our reading sessions.
In Maths we are participating in hands on activities that encourage the students to investigate capacity, learning our teen numbers, think bug count on small addition strategy, counting and subitising.
Science is linked to our English unit, and we are learning all about Living and Non-living things. Soon your child will be coming home with a travel buddy for the night, and they will have to show how they would care for it. Don’t panic as it is only a stuffed toy!
Regards,
Hayley, Ashleigh, Andrea, Cassie, Wendy and Jackie.
Year 1 Capers
Welcome back to Term 3.
We have begun our Information Report writing in Year 1. We are thoroughly enjoying starting to learn all about insects. Over the last 2 weeks we have learnt all about the text structure and Ladybugs. Keep an eye out for any dead bugs around your house, students can bring them in to look at under a magnifying glass.
I hope all that attended the Innisfail Show over the long weekend got a chance to look at some of the work produced by Year 1 this year so far.
For our Science assessment task this semester, each student will need their own box of some kind e.g. shoe box, cereal box etc. These will be used to create a diorama showing habitat.
In Maths we have been practising our doubles plus one facts, subtraction strategies, sharing equal amounts, mass, capacity and number lines.
Steven, Leigh and Fiona.

Hello from Year 6!
Welcome everybody to Term 3. Term 3 generally sees a lot of growth, a lot of work, and gets us one step closer to the end of the year. This term will bring a lot of new units, and some exciting learning.
Our Maths will continue building on skills that we have learned in Terms 1 and 2, applying what we already know in new ways, and with more problem solving.
HaSS will see us looking at Australia’s system of government, where we look at the structure of the government, and find out who does what when it comes to our different Houses and levels.
Science will be Life on Earth, where we consider different types of life, from whales down to mould. We will look at what it means to be alive, and the different forms that can take.
In English we are writing Narratives this term, with an overall theme of Survival. This will be linked to our Novel Study book for this Term, which is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. This is a story of a young boy who finds himself stranded in the North American forest and needs to stay alive. This is an exciting story, which will hopefully inspire some great writing!
Health will be a unit about Transitions and involves big themes such as the move to High School, changing friend groups, and other changes. We will look at strategies to make this easier, even though it can still be a difficult time.
Please remember that you can always contact us on Class Dojo or arrange a meeting if preferred. The end of this Term will be Parent Teacher interviews, and we will give more information about that as we get closer.
Nathan Worth, Melanie Worth, and Anita Knight.
L.O.T.E News
Bentornati (Welcome back). It was a pleasure monitoring Year 5 and 6 students carrying out their culminating assessments last term. I was very pleased with the results achieved by students.
This term, Year 5 students will be extending their knowledge of Italian verbs by using the third person singular. They will be working together in threes using structured questions in a conversation. They will present their conversation to the class.
Year 6 students will be examining their preferred sports and hobbies, extending their understanding of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs thus enhancing their knowledge of sentence structure and grammar.
Continue encouraging your child to speak Italian with you and discuss what they are learning.
Arrivederci (Goodbye)
