Goondi SS Newsletter 05.06.24
From Leadership
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we are nearing the end of Term 2, I would like to inform you our newsletter will be changing at the end of Term 3. As from Term 4 this year our newsletter will be within our Facebook page. Our changes have come from parent voice and unfortunately only 50% of parents reading our current newsletter from our findings and data sheet. Hopefully this will encourage and be more user friendly for our parents.
Pre Prep – We are busy organising our PREP transition program for 2024. If your child will be commencing PREP next year or if you know of anyone planning on enrolling at Goondi State School, please contact the school for an enrolment pack and to organise an interview.
Report Cards – Report Cards for Semester 1 will be finalised in the coming weeks, they will be ready to go home on Thursday 20th June.
P&C – Our Spell-a-thon has taken place this term and all students in P-6 participated. Staff have shared the fantastic work ethics of students and high results, also amazing gains from individual students. Congratulations to all students and a massive thankyou to the parents supporting and practising every night. As you may already be aware, this is a large fundraising event for our P&C.
Our newly formed P&C have also resurrected Tuckshop – with over 140 orders in their first week. Please support our P&C as they work hard to ensure Goondi SS continues to thrive.
ROAD SAFETY –The school and P&C have commenced work with the SafeSt Program, looking at different initiatives and solutions to ensure we have adequate parking for parents and the safety of all students is paramount. This process is on-going and Mrs Story has dedicated her time to ensure the initial meeting took place this term with all key stakeholders.
Please remember school officially ends at 3:00PM, unfortunately parents are arriving between 15 minutes and 45 minutes late in the afternoon.
Innisfail Young Performers Competition will take place during Week 8.
Pre-Prep Parent Information Session is schedule for Wednesday 12th June (Week 9).
Spell-a-thon money is due in Week 9.
Athletics Carnival on Friday 14th June (Week 9).
HOTSHOTS – Week 10
Further information about these events will be sent out in the coming weeks.
We look forward to seeing our students’ kicking goals throughout the term!
Kind Regards, Mrs Kaitara and Ms Mohammed

With only three weeks until the end of the term we have been very busy with student assessment. The children have been retelling the story "Mrs Wishy Washy” for their writing assessment. We are looking forward to seeing what the children can independently write. Students will also be doing their oral presentations this week on their fantastic family posters.
In Science students have been completing assessment about the weather. In HASS families and celebrations and in Health emotions and feelings.
In Maths students have been completing assessment on concepts taught this term. These included number representations, patterns, days of the week and matching numbers and words. The students have been working very hard and should be commended for their efforts.
Report cards will be sent home in Week 10. When you receive them if you have any questions about your child’s report card, please see your child’s teacher.
Last week we started Spell-a-thon. In Prep it finishes on Wednesday 5/6/24 as they only complete 10-15 words per day. All students are doing a fabulous job chopping, blending and writing the words! They really want to get 50 out of 50 and receive a 100% Spell-a-thon medal! Sponsorship money is due back by Friday 14th June. The prizes will be drawn in Week 10 at Parade Friday 21st June at 2.30pm.
On Thursday 20th of June (Week 10) Prep students will be going on an excursion to Daradgee Environmental Education Centre. If you wish for your child to attend this excursion, please return forms as invoices will be going out this week. We are all very excited about this fun event.

Year 1 Capers
Week 8 already! We have certainly had a huge 2 weeks in Year One completing tests in all areas of the curriculum. We have been very proud of the way all students have tried their best and given all tests a red-hot go. Keep it up Year One!
Congratulations goes to all of the students who participated in the Spell-a-thon this year. We saw many students achieve 100/100 and we were extremely impressed with the number of students who improved out of sight from their pre test. A big thankyou to all parents for helping your child learn their words at home.
In Science, the students began making their boats using their knowledge of which materials were strong, waterproof and would be suitable to float and hold marbles. Stay tuned to hear of how many marbles your child’s boat held.
In HASS, the students have had their engineering hats on and designed a playground that is fun, safe and suitable for people of all ages. Ask your child about any special features they may have added. Have a great week!

Year 2 Capers
Hello from Year 2!
Unbelievable that it’s week 8 already! Year 2 have completed their model of a lifecycle, choosing either a chicken or a frog. We were blown away with the creativity and knowledge our students used to construct their lifecycles. Some students used playdough and feathers to make their chickens, while others chose to use pom poms and googly eyes. They all look great!
We are working very hard in Year 2 to get our assessments finished. We have a lot of assessment to get through, but it all contributes as evidence towards a result for your learner and highlights any gaps in knowledge, allowing us to plan their learning for the future. It’s cool to be at school! So, please ensure your child is at school every day so they can learn. This time of the year can be tiring for your child. Make sure they are getting enough sleep and eating lots of healthy food to fuel their brain!
Sports day is coming up next week on Friday the 14th. Fingers crossed that this sunny weather holds up. Your child is encouraged to wear their sports colours on the day to support their team. Parents and carers are welcome to attend to cheer on your child.
Regards,
Tayla Vandal, Kathy Pike and Jeanette Spataro.
Year 3 Capers
Week 8 has arrived quickly, and the term is nearing the end. We are deeply immersed in assessments, with most of our testing already completed. We have finished our genre writing (persuasive text) and all of our Math assessments. The remaining assessments include Science, HASS, Speaking, Reading, and Health. Over the next few weeks, we will be revisiting mathematical concepts that students found challenging, as identified in their tests. Additionally, we will continue practising our spelling mastery words (lessons 51-55).
A huge congratulations to all students who participated in the Spell-a-thon last week! We saw some fantastic successes.
On Friday, we have our Innisfail Young Performers Competition. Please ensure your child has returned their permission note. We will be leaving on Friday, June 7th at 10:50 am and plan to return to school around 2:00 pm. We will have lunch at 10:30 am before boarding the bus, and our second lunch will be at the hall. Please pack lunches that do not require refrigeration and make sure water bottles are included.
As we approach the end of the term, we have noticed many overdue library books. Please ensure your child returns their library books before the term ends.
Thank you,
Ashley, Janelle, Leigh, and Amanda
Year 4 Capers
Spell-a-thon was a fun experience! It was lovely to see the students so engaged in learning their 100 words at school each day. Congratulations to all students who completed the Spell-a-thon 😊 Please remember that Spell-a-thon envelopes and money are due back to school by Friday 14th June.
As we near the end of term, we are starting to prepare for end of term assessments. In each subject we are working on revising content in preparation for assessments. Please ensure that your child is getting enough sleep and is attending school on time each day.
There will be no homework sent home in Weeks 9 and 10. If you wish for your child to do something at home, they can revise this term’s homework or access their IXL account at home.
We are planning an excursion in Term 3 to the Cairns Aquarium. This experience will support the learning for our English and Science units. More information about this will be sent home or communicated on Class Dojo as soon as we know more.
Kind regards,
Miss Jade Reitano and Mrs Jenna Sulter

Students have just completed their Spell-a-thon tests and received their scores. Well done to those students who practiced and improved their results! Please remember fundraising money is due by Friday Week 9 to be in the draw for the prizes.
In class, we have a very busy Week 8 and Week 9 completing assessment for each subject. Please remember, every day counts as even one day missed will result in having to catch up on important assessment. Report cards will be sent home in Week 10.

Year 6 Capers
Hello from Year 6!
Week 8 finds us almost at the end of Term 2, and almost halfway through the year! It’s been such an amazing journey so far, and we look forward immensely to what will happen during the rest of Year 6. Currently we are assessing our classes on the knowledge and skills they have learned over this term and year, the results of which will be coming home in our report cards, in week 10. When these reports come home if there are any questions or queries then please contact us, remembering that we are only halfway done, and still have two more terms of learning before our final reports at the end of the year. Well done to all of the students on their work so far! There has been some really great work done, and some good effort applied.
The mid-year break is a great time to restock school supplies, and make sure that your learner has everything they need, such as headphones and hats. We endeavour to let parents and carers know when they need to provide any stationary, however make sure you ask your learner if there is anything specific they have run out of, or don’t have.
Please also keep an eye out for upcoming events, such as the second ISC transition day, and the HOTSHOTS program that runs in Week 10 (by invitation). Matt Sharrock from ISC will visit our school in Week 9 with further information for all students. We also have Inter-House Athletics coming up next Wednesday (the 12th – morning only) and Friday (the 14th – all day).
Nathan Worth, Melanie Worth, and Anita Knight.
L.O.T.E News
By speaking, writing, listening to new words, phrases, sentences and questions in Italian, years 5 and 6 Italian classes at Goondi State School are furthering their knowledge of the Italian language. Well done students!
Year 5 students are going through and revising previous questions about themselves. They are also working on their pronunciation re the Italian alphabet. Students are also completing their assessment with their teacher. Year 6 students are completing their assessment on La mia giornata (My daily routine) in Italian. They are using images to help them understand how to describe their daily routine, expanding their knowledge of nouns and verbs.
The bookwork standard shown in their exercise books is pleasing. Feedback and assistance is given to students regularly. Continue encouraging your child to speak Italian with you and discuss what they are learning.
Arrivederci (Goodbye)

Instrumental Music News
What an exciting couple of weeks the instrumental music students have had!
On Wednesday 22nd May all primary students attended Fanfare at ISC. Fanfare is the biennial state-wide festival for bands and orchestras in Queensland State Schools. It showcases the outstanding instrumental music making that is occurring in school ensembles across the state. All ensembles held themselves to a high standard and walked away with silvers on the day. This is a great achievement for the students and their hard work in the lead up to the event is to be commended.
On Friday 24th May, 39 students arrived bright and early to ISC for a trip to Cairns to see the Queensland Symphony Orchestra play! This was an exciting trip where year 5 & 6 students got to see all the instruments that make up an orchestra. Students had a great time chatting and interacting with some of the musicians before the show. They also enjoyed seeing and listening to some of the more obscure instruments such as a contra bassoon, a harp and even an accordion!
In Week 8 students will be playing at Innisfail Young Performers. Many students will be participating in the solo, duet and small ensembles sections on Wednesday, before all competing in the band competition on Friday night.
