Goondi SS Newsletter 13.09.23
From the Leadership Team
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a very busy Term 3 and our range of events have included District Athletics earlier in the term, NAIDOC Celebrations, Children’s Book Week activities, Poetry Idol last Friday and HOTSHOTS (Helping Our Top Students Have Opportunities To Shine) for our Year 6 students.
We held the District Athletics Carnival at Goondi this term and as we always are, were very proud of our student and team performances. Our students gave their all and displayed great sportsmanship with a great feeling of teamwork and support.
We achieved some strong NAPLAN results across both Year 3 and 5 with Goondi attaining good performance in many areas of achievement. We do not yet have scaled scores or comparison data against Queensland, but will be sure to share this once available. We will always strive to support our students to achieve to the best of their potential.
Our Pre-Prep program has commenced this term and will continue into Term 4. Our program is of a very high standard and will continue to lay the ground work for success in children’s first years of schooling.
The regulations around Pre-Prep students has changed over the past few years.
Pre-Prep allows our new students and parents to build relationships with teachers and familiarise themselves with the school.
Information from the Director, Kindergarten Programs in the ECEC Division of Central Office that ‘in attendance’ means that the parent/s must be with their child at all times. The child cannot be signed in with the parent/s, and then each goes to a different area of the school.
This is why we have implemented changes to our Pre-Prep format this year. Thankyou to all the parents who have provided feedback.
We were blown away by Book Week this term and the standard of costumes for the dress-up day. We are all too aware of the efforts of our students, families and friends that go in to making them.
Poetry Idol took place in the hall this Term. Staff were impressed by the performances of each of the finalists. There have been so many great recitals at each stage of Poetry Idol this term and I am glad that I am not one of the judges as this would be an almost impossible task!
On assembly this Thursday, we will present a number of students in Years 1-6 with their Goondi 5 Exemplary Behaviour certificates for achieving an “A” key level. As we have said many times now, these students are all outstanding role models and are well deserving of these awards. If your child is one of these, please congratulate them. They have done an amazing job.
Once again, thank you for your continued support of our school.
Regards,
Tania Kaitara and Khadeeja Mohammed

We are completing our animal enclosures to demonstrate our knowledge of what our chosen animal needs to live and to keep it safe. This requires a lot of discussion and experimentation with the different building materials we have available. It has been lovely to listen to the students have thoughtful conversations amongst themselves about where to put their shelter for example or if the pond will be large enough for their animal to swim. They are demonstrating a solid knowledge of what living things need to survive.
We have been finishing up our assessment piece for our information report and on Tuesday we were lucky enough to have a visit from Boris the baby pig. We got to look at his features and talk about him before we started our final draft of our writing.
Thank you, Mr. Sclippa, for bringing him in for a visit.
Spelling homework and home readers are finished for the term so that we can reorganise them. Over the next couple of days we would encourage you to replace these with sight word practice. We are seeing great progress with reading and spelling for those children who are working on their sight words regularly.
As always, if you have questions or concerns or wish to share some information with us, please make contact with us to arrange a suitable time to talk.
Thank you
Mrs. Myers, Mrs. Barba, Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. Tanti
Year 1 Capers
Well we are at the end of yet another term and I know everyone is certainly looking forward to the holidays after a fast paced and hard-working term.
All students have finished writing their assessment tasks about bees and should feel very proud with the expert reports they have written. Everyone has certainly enjoyed learning about different insects this term and have become budding entomologists.
In Maths this week we are consolidating all concepts taught over the term with a focus on number lines, fact families and subtraction.
We would like to commend all students on their hard-working and focused behaviour during swimming week. We saw first hand some students overcome their fear of water to be able to put their face and head under. We also saw students who could not ‘dog paddle or tread water’ able to perform these extremely important skills successfully. Well done Year One.
Have a long and relaxing holiday, see you in Term 4!
Leigh, Fiona, Hayley, Ashleigh, Wendy and Anita.
Year 2 Capers
Hello from Year 2!
Congratulations everyone, we made it to Week 10. This is the last week of school before our two-week break, coming back on Tuesday the 3rd of October, due to the public holiday on the 2nd. We want to thank everyone for a great term, and we hope that everyone has an enjoyable break, if you get one. We look forward to getting everyone back refreshed and ready for their final term of Year 2, where we will be tackling some new and exciting topics, such as:
Science where we explore physical forces such as push and pull, and conduct experiments to learn about forces.
We get to look at the history of Innisfail in HaSS, with a bit of a focus on the cyclones that have devastated our region. There could be lots of opportunities for discussion at home with this one, if you were around for Larry or Yasi.
English sees us learning a new style of writing, the persuasive text. Students will be able to not only state an opinion, but back it up with reasons as well. This is a great skill for students to learn, and is fun to teach as well.
Stay safe over the holidays, and we will see you for a new adventure in Term 4.
Regards,
Nathan Worth, Robyn Scheiwe, Kathy Pike and Jeanette Spataro.
Year 3 Capers
The term is coming to an end and our assessment period is wrapping up. We are continuing to finish our information reports on New Zealand. We are practising the skills of drafting, editing and handwriting.
In Maths, we are reviewing all Year 3 concepts such as subtraction.
Congratulations to our Poetry Idol finalists for their valiant efforts!
We had a wonderful time at swimming last week, and the students showed great improvement.
Over the week we will be sending home stationery slips for students who need their stationery replenished. We are sending home hats this week. Please ensure you wash them over the holidays and bring them back on the first day of term 4. We hope you have a safe and happy holiday. See you in Term 4!
Kind Regards,
Ashley, Janelle and Amanda
Year 4 Capers
As we near the end of Term 3, students are still completing assessments for all subject areas. All students have worked extremely hard for the past week and should be commended for this. As there are still assessments to be completed, it is essential students are getting adequate sleep, eating breakfast and staying hydrated.
There is no homework for Week 10.
We hope you have a happy and safe holiday and we look forward to seeing you all in Term 4 😊
Jade, Leigh and Lizette
Year 5 Capers
Week 10! We have had a busy few weeks finishing off assessment.
We have worked on creating a stop motion animation that depicts an ethical dilemma. Students used play dough to create an interesting story for an audience.
In Maths we are reviewing all Year 5 concepts after completing testing. Students are reminded to carefully read the question to ensure their answer actually matches what the question was asking.
Swimming was last week and will happen again in Term 4.
We hope you have a safe and happy holiday. See you in term 4!
Kayla, Rebecca and Greg
Year 6 Capers
In Year 6 we can’t believe it’s the end of Term 3, which means we only have one more term of primary school left! Nearly everyone is ready for a break after a huge term of learning. Everyone has given their opinion on whether Ned Kelly was a hero, villain or a victim; we all know how to read synoptic data from the TV weather report and how to prepare for a cyclone.
One of the toughest parts of the teachers’ year is over as well – choosing the finalists for Poetry Idol! Congratulations to all students who presented this year – in the classroom, in the semi-finals and in the hall for the finals! Well done to Aria, Addison, Ciel and Azalea for doing us proud in the finals, and to Addison who was the 2023 Year 6 winner!
This week we have been finalising any outstanding assessment and consolidating concepts. Please encourage your students to keep reading over the holidays! The local library usually has fun school holidays activities scheduled. If you’re not a member of the library, you can sign up to be able to borrow all sorts of reading materials including books, comics and magazines, and to also be able to access reading apps which give you free access to e-books and audiobooks.
Have a lovely break and we look forward to hitting the ground running next term!

L.O.T.E News
Well done students in Years 5 and 6 Italian at Goondi State School who have worked on their knowledge of the Italian language by speaking, writing, listening to and using new words in phrases and sentences in Italian.
Year 5 students have used teacher-developed tables to understand nouns and adjectives. They have asked questions in Italian in simple responses with verbs and have completed their assessment. Year 6 students have asked and answered questions using nouns, verbs and adjectives in compound sentences and have completed their assessment. Students in Italian classes have also listened to songs to enhance fluency.
The bookwork standard shown in their exercise books is pleasing. Feedback and assistance is given to students regularly. Continue encouraging your child to speak Italian with you and discuss what they are learning.
Arrivederci (Goodbye)
