Prep Capers
In English, we have been learning nursery rhymes and practicing reciting them in front of a group of people in order to help build our confidence speaking in front of an audience. This will prepare us for Poetry Idol which is coming up later in the term. All students should have selected a poem that they are learning to recite in front of our class, then on to a year level final. Finally, a few lucky finalists will get to represent Prep at the whole school Idol competition in Week 9.
Term 3 Maths lessons continuing to work on strategies to help us add numbers as well as continuing our focus on time and the ordering of events in our everyday life.
Sports Day was a big success and we all had a wonderful time running on the big oval, supporting others as they ran as well as playing Zig-Zag ball, sack races and egg and spoon racing. Congratulations to Japnaaz from Prep B and Navraj from Prep A for winning the encouragement awards for Prep. All students displayed good sportsmanship and perseverance which was lovely to see.
As always, if you have questions or concerns or wish to share some information with us, please make contact with us to arrange a suitable time to talk.
Thank you
Mrs. Myers, Mrs. Barba, Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. Tanti
Year 1 Capers
Writing Information Repots has become one of our favourite things to do in Year 1. We are thoroughly enjoying learning all about insects. Over the last 2 weeks we have learnt all about Ladybugs and the next two weeks we will be learning about butterflies.
“Ladybugs are omnivores because they eat insects and plants.” - Asher Stephenson
“There are 17 500 different types of butterflies that live all over the world” - Evie Taylor
For a technology assessment task this semester, each child will need their own box of some kind eg shoe box, cereal box etc. These will used to create a diorama showing the habitat for a chosen insect.
In Maths we have been practising our doubles plus one facts, subtraction strategies, capacity, numberlines and the Bar Model. Keep practicing poems each night ready for the class performance in Week 7.

Year 2 Capers
Hi from Year 2!!
We’re off to a wet and cold term this time, but this won’t last forever. This is a great time to make sure that your learner has a hat to be able to participate fully in PE, as well as play time. The best option is a Goondi State School hat with the logo, available from the Uniform Shop (please contact the office for details and hours), however if they don’t have this then any broad brimmed hat will be ok. Caps are not allowed. Sun safety is an important part of our environment, and we want all of our learners to be able to join in.
This term we are doing Poetry Idol, so make sure to practise with your student at home. This is not only a great competition but also counts towards their Speaking result for the term, so any practice they can get is important.
We are also doing our Technology unit this term, where we build a house for the Three Little Pigs. This house needs to be strong so the Big Bad Wolf doesn’t blow it away, so if you can spare any materials from home, such as cardboard, Styrofoam, plastic or anything else that might be useful, please send it along with your learner.
Don’t forget Homework is due every Friday, and will be sent home on Monday. Doing this Homework regularly will help the students perform better in their spelling test, done every Friday morning. We thank you for your cooperation in this.
Regards,
Nathan Worth, Robyn Scheiwe, Kathy Pike and Jeanette Spataro.
Year 3 Capers
What a great start it has been so far to Term 3. It is so nice to see all students back to school ready to learn.
We have hit the ground running and commenced our English unit on information reports. The students are really taking a liking to exploring Australia and its neighbouring countries. We are currently learning about Papua New Guinea and writing an information report together as a class.
In Maths, we have been learning about time, money and graphing, and exploring these concepts further. We are loving using fake money to represent dollar and coin combinations such as $34.45 and $78.90.
We have begun our HASS unit and explored how to use BOLTSS on a map, as well as explored the continents of the world.
Thank you for a great start to Term 3.
Kind Regards,
Ashley, Janelle and Amanda
Year 4 Capers
Wow! Week 4 already!
In English this term we will be reading a variety of Scientific Reports about introduced feral animals and the impact they have on native flora and fauna as well as economic impact to people. Starting with feral fallow deer, we will learn about feral pigs, feral dogs, feral cats, feral rabbits, feral goats and cane toads. Each week we will be writing information about that week’s feral animal in a scientific report.
In Maths we will continue to practise appropriate strategies for multiplication and division. Recognise common fractions in familiar contexts and make connections between fraction and decimal notations up to two decimal places.
In HASS, we will investigate the natural features of Australia and China.
In Science, we will investigate needs of living things and their life-cycles. We are very excited for our excursion to the Cairns Aquarium in Week 6. Thank you to the many parents who have returned the permission form and completed on-line payment. If you have not yet done so, it would be really great if they could be returned by Friday 4th of August.
Most of the students have selected their poem for Poetry Idol, and should be practising it along with their regular homework.
Until next time: Jade, Leigh and Lizette.
Year 5 Capers
In English we are currently exploring comics. We are exploring a range of animation types to look at how the story is created using engaging settings and characters. Students have been very engaged in analysing and creating animated stories.
In Mathematics we are revising all 3 strands of the Australian curriculum and extending our knowledge on certain topics. In science we are creating shadow puppets and analysing how light can be reflected.
In HASS we are learning about our Australian Democracy and our freedom in the country. In design technology we are learning about bikes and the materials they are made out of to analyse why that particular material was selected. We will be exploring the purpose of helmets and how they protect our head.

Year 6 Capers
Hello Class 6B and Class 5/6 families!
It’s been a busy start to the term for Year 6! We kicked off with the show holiday, had our world-famous Sports Day and experienced the delights of rain…endless rain. As always, we have been working hard to ensure we are getting the most out of all learning areas.
In Maths, we have been consolidating knowledge and focussing on areas highlighted by our Term 2 assessment as needing extra practice. In English we are learning how to construct opinion pieces and research arguments to support our opinions. Each week we have been investigating the different stages of this more formal genre of writing.
In HASS we have moved from Federation to study the Australian system of government and all that that entails. Science continues to be exciting; this term we are looking at natural disasters and how changes inherent in and external to the dynamics of the Earth influence these. Health is all about transitioning and adjusting to change this term – the perfect lead-in to the big life-change of graduation at the end of Term 4! Our Design and Technology unit involves a short but intense look at coding and digital systems this term.
We will continue to liaise with our Year 7 teachers from ISC to further ensure the smooth transition between primary and high school. Initial discussions with the high school indicate that many of the habits we instill in our students, such as insisting on them showing full working out in Maths, for example, are habits that will continue to serve them well, and are vital in their senior studies. We are excited to discover how we can further assist our Year 6 students in their transition to high school. And, of course, our 5s are continuing preparations of their own as they transition towards becoming school leaders next year, which is just as exciting!
Thank you for your support!
Melanie Worth, Dominic Ward and Greg Azzopardi.
The Arts News
Wow! What a busy start to The Arts. With our NAIDOC celebrations underway, our focus in Music so far has been learning about First Nations musical instruments and song. In preparation for our Naidoc assembly our students have been learning TABA NABA – a Torres Strait Islander nursery rhyme which celebrates culture, family and the reef. You are all welcome to attend our Naidoc festivities on Friday and hear our entire school sing this beautiful song. Year 4 continue to learn the recorder and I encourage them all to practice as much as possible for homework. There are many great You Tube links they can follow also to assist in this. This one in particular - https://www.youtube.com/@VisualMusicalMinds/search?query=recorder Year 5 and 6 are concentrating on Genres of Music. This week we have explored UK pop band The Beatles and learnt the song Twist and Shout and Yellow Submarine.
In Visual Arts, our students have been very busy creating works for NAIDOC display. Prep to 2 have been exploring the process of etching by scratching aboriginal symbols into Australian animal cut-outs. Our Year 3 students are exploring Birds in Art and are learning about iconic Australian birds and experimenting with painting techniques. Year 4 are focused on ‘Objects in Art’ and are utilizing natural and man-made forms to create a series of work. Year 5 and 6 are exploring the ‘Animal as Art’ and finalising their Turtle designs for NAIDOC. I look forward to sharing some of their incredible creations on Facebook and in the upcoming Newsletters.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all who contributed to another fabulous display at the Innisfail Show this year. Many of the staff and students worked tirelessly to produce a great body of work and I sincerely hope that many of you had the opportunity to see the display.

L.O.T.E News
Years 5 and 6 Italian classes at Goondi State School are furthering their knowledge of the Italian language by speaking, writing, listening to and using new words in phrases and sentences in Italian. Well done students!
Year 5 students are learning how to ask and answer questions in Italian using teacher-developed tables. They are using this knowledge in simple responses with verbs. Year 6 students are using teacher-developed tables to gain greater understanding of Italian grammar. Students are asking and answering questions using nouns, verbs and adjectives. Students in Italian classes are also listening to songs to enhance fluency.
The bookwork standard shown in their exercise books is pleasing. Feedback and assistance is given to students regularly. Continue encouraging your child to speak Italian with you and discuss what they are learning.
Arrivederci (Goodbye)
