Goondi SS Newsletter 26.04.23
From the Leadership Team
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 2! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and all our students are excited for another busy term ahead.
Our Spell-a-thon takes place this term and all students in P-6 participate. Spelling lists and sponsorship envelopes will be sent home in the next four weeks. As you may already be aware, this is our P&C’s best fundraiser for the year. Please support our P&C to do it again as they work hard to ensure Goondi continues to thrive.
Year 5 leadership camp will take place from Wednesday the 24th of May to Friday the 26th of May in Week 6. This term, selected students will participate in District and Regional Cross Country.
Under 8’s day will be held in Week 8. This will be followed by a Prep parent information session in Week 9, as well as our first Prep transition day in Week 10. Our term will conclude with our Athletics Carnival in Week 10 and Report cards for semester one being sent home. Further information about these events will be sent out in the coming weeks.
We are already starting to organise our PREP transition program for 2023. If your child will be commencing PREP next year or if you know of anyone planning on enrolling at Goondi State School, please contact the school for an enrolment pack and to organise an interview.
If you haven’t made time to meet with your child’s teacher last term, please contact them with any questions or concerns. The sooner a problem is highlighted, the easier it is to find a solution.
ANZAC COMMEMORATIVE CEREMONY
On Monday, Goondi held its school ANZAC Ceremony. The ceremony was co-ordinated and run by our Year 6 students. We were joined by Mr Ron Henderson of the Innisfail RSL and the ceremony was both moving and respectful.
In his address, Mr Henderson spoke of the animals, in particular Simpson and his five donkeys and how they played a key role in WWI. He also spoke about the ANZAC spirit at Gallipoli 107 years ago and the wars, conflicts and peace keeping missions since.
Congratulation to our students for their exemplary conduct. As always, our Year 6 students did a fantastic job in running the ceremony and spoke incredibly well.
Finally, on Tuesday we were very proud to see many of our students and families join us as we took part in the ANZAC day march in Innisfail. Even on a wet and dreary day, it was fantastic to be reminded of the pride and respect in our community as we remember those fallen servicemen and women who have given us the chance to enjoy today’s freedoms.
DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY
The district cross-country will be held on Friday 28th April at Warrina Lakes commencing at 9:00am. Selected 10, 11 and 12 year-old students from our school will compete for places in the Innisfail district team to contest the Peninsula Championships later in the term.
ROAD SAFETY
A reminder to all our parents and carers to remain aware of road safety at school drop off and pick up times. It is essential that we teach and model safe conduct around road traffic, by always using the school crossing and never allowing children to walk between parked cars at these busy times of the day.
Please also consider other road users at the busy afternoon pick up time. There are many unused car park spaces by the northern oval. It only takes a minute to walk back to the pick-up gate.
I thank you all for your co-operation and help, as we place the safety of our students as top priority.
We look forward to seeing our students diving in to their learning throughout the term!
Regards,
Tania and Kristina

Drama! Drama! Drama!
Wow! What a great start to the term and everyone is already very excited for what is install for Drama! We have started exploring where and why there is Drama, and how it is applied in a real-life context? Discussions around acting, performing, movies, plays, theatre and musicals has already excited the students about what they will be focusing on throughout the term. Prep to Year 2 will be engaged in role playing around the concept of ‘Going Shopping’. Year 3 to 4 will be responding to drama by performing group plays about real life issues in particular ‘Endangered Animals’. Our Year 5 and 6 students will create performances based on ‘Natural Disasters’. Its going to be a fun, challenging and energetic term and I look forward to seeing the student’s confidence progress as they perform before their peers.
