Goondi SS Newsletter 14.09.2022
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a very busy Term 3 and our range of events have included Poetry Idol last Monday, District Athletics earlier in the term, Children’s Book Week and ICAS.
We held the District Athletics carnival at Goondi this term and as we always are, were very proud of our student and team performances. Our students gave their all and displayed great sportsmanship with a great feeling of teamwork and support.
We achieved some very strong NAPLAN results across both Year 3 and 5 with Goondi attaining good performance in the upper two bands of achievement. We do not yet have scaled scores or comparison data against Queensland, but will be sure to share this once available. We will always strive to support our students to achieve to the best of their potential.
Our Pre-Prep program is scheduled to commence on October 5th. This year we have a new pre-prep teacher in Mrs Heard. Mrs Heard is a highly professional and knowledgeable teacher who has taught at Goondi for a number of years. Our program is of a very high standard and will continue to lay the ground work for success in children’s first years of schooling.
We were blown away by bookweek this term and the standard of costumes for the dress-up day. We are all too aware of the efforts of our students, families and friends that go to in making them.
Poetry Idol took place in the hall on Monday morning. We were all so impressed by the performances of each of the finalists. There have been so many great recitals at each stage of Poetry Idol this term and I am glad that I am not one of the judges as this would be an almost impossible task!
On assembly this Thursday, we will present a number of students in Years 1-6 with their Goondi 5 Exemplary Behaviour certificates for achieving an “A” key level.
As we have said many times now, these students are all outstanding role models and are well deserving of these awards. If your child is one of these, please congratulate them. They have done an amazing job.
Finally, as many of you already know, I will be taking the position of Acting Principal at Hambledon State School during Term 4. I will inform you as to who the new principal at Goondi will be as soon as the selection process is completed. So, for now I will say goodbye to our fantastic school and community and I wish you all a very successful final term of the year.
Once again, thank you for your continued support of our school.
Regards,
Peter Begemann
Principal

ATTENDANCE
This fortnight, our attendance sits at 87.4%. If you are experiencing any issues with attendance, please do not hesitate to contact the school. We are happy to help in any way we can.
We have been very pleased in the last week with a number of our classes achieving 100% attendance!
PRE-PREP PROGRAM
Our Pre-Prep program commencement date is Wednesday October 5th in Week 1 of next term. We are really looking forward to welcoming our 2022 Pre-Prep kids and their parents and carers to Goondi State School on Wednesday and will run weekly, finishing on Wednesday 23rd November. Morning (9:00-11:00am) and afternoon (1:00-3:00pm).
MEDICAL PLANS
If your child has a medical condition that may require treatment or attention at school, this means that we need to have an up to date medical plan. A common example is an asthma plan. Please contact the school as soon as possible to arrange your plan.
PARENT PICK UP and DROP OFF
Please be mindful of other road users when parking in front of the school each morning. Recently, there has been unsafe parking in front of the Prep building with cars even parking outside the designated spaces. Please help us to ensure risks are minimised and everyone can come and go safely to school.
SCHOOL RESUMES
Parents and carers are reminded that school resumes next term on Tuesday 4th October. Monday October 3rd is a public holiday.
KEEP A WATCH ON OUR SCHOOL
During the school holidays, we ask parents, carers, neighbours and students to keep a watch on our school. If you see anything suspicious, call the School Watch hotline on 13 17 88. The School Watch Program is a partnership between the department and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in schools.
Prep Capers
Well we have come to the end of the Term. What a busy term it has been!
In English, the students completed their Information Report about Chickens. Congratulations and well done to all students. They all did an outstanding job on their final writing piece for the term.
In Maths, the students completed two Assessment tasks. The students work very well with number and can represent numbers in many different ways. They also demonstrate a great understanding of measurement and shape concepts. Again, well done to all students.
In Science, the students created their Animal Enclosure assessment using recycled materials. We are super impressed with the way they turned out.
Don’t forget to return any Library books before the school holidays. Stay safe over the holidays. Have fun with your child/ren. We will see you all back here Tuesday the 4th of October.
Kind regards:
Tess, Leigh, Cassie, Janice, Wendy, Kylie, Rhonda, Priscilla, Amanda, Donna, Jackie and Laura
Year 1 Capers
Well we are at the end of yet another term and I know everyone is certainly looking forward to the holidays after a fast paced and hard-working term.
The flowers in the Year One garden are all having a growth spurt with flowers and even some fruit on the tomato plants. Hopefully when we come back next term, the garden will be glowing golden with sunflowers.
All students have finished writing their assessment tasks about bees and should feel very proud with the expert reports they have written. Everyone has certainly enjoyed learning about different insects this term.
In Maths this week we are consolidating all concepts taught over the term.
As it is the end of the term, equipment supplies are running low again. Please keep an eye out for your child’s equipment list that needs replenishing for next term.
Have a long and relaxing holiday, see you in Term 4!
Leigh, Hayley, Tayla, Fiona and Kimberly
Year 2 Capers
Hello from Year 2! What an amazing Term 3 we have had. We can’t believe it has gone by so quickly. Students have produced some incredible work these past few weeks, in all subject areas.
In English our narratives have become more complex as we add technical skills such as adverbs and speech marks. We have been producing some amazing stories as a result!
Maths has seen us continue our development in number facts, mental strategies, as well as transformations of shapes. Time continues to develop, as we look at increments such as 5 minutes, as well as elapsed time in word problems.
HASS saw us comparing objects from the past to the present, and how things have changed over time. This was a great unit that seemed to capture imagination. Science was another great unit, as we looked at how living things grow and develop over their life cycles. Students have put in great effort with both of these.
A highlight of the term was doing our Technology unit where we developed a Scratch program to tell a joke. This was very rewarding watching it all come together.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy break over the next two weeks, and we look forward to seeing everyone for week 1 next term!
Regards,
Nathan Worth, Robyn Scheiwe, Leigh Tredwell and Jeanette Spataro.
Year 3 Capers
Hello everyone,
This week sees the end of yet another very busy term in the grade 3 classrooms.
We are finalising our ‘Hot Stuff’ unit in Science and in Technology we have completed our pinball machines and assessment booklets. We have commenced our HASS unit where we will describe and interpret data about Australian and neighbouring places and investigate how and why places are similar and different.
In Maths we have extended our understanding of the place value system by investigating decimals. This week we are reviewing subtraction and applying the algorithm to solve a range of problems. Some children are becoming very proficient with their multiplication facts and their mental computation strategies.
Most students have finished their draft copy of their Information Report about New Zealand and are now editing and writing a final copy.
Have a safe and enjoyable break,
Until next term,
Donna, Janelle, Paula and Lizette
Year 4 Capers
Week 10 is here and I am sure that we are all looking forward to a well-deserved break. We commend the students for their hard work and commitment during the final few weeks of this term.
On Tuesday Week 9, we held the Year 4 Poetry Idol semi finals. Judging was a very challenging job. Congratulations to Torah, Adam and Ava who have been selected to move through to the finals.
School holidays are an ideal time to check if students are adequately prepared for Term 4 and purchase any required stationery items. Your child has completed a check list of required items. Please note that novelty stationery items are not permitted at school as they are frequently ineffective and can be distracting. We are also still in need of tissues as they were difficult to purchase at the start of the year so we are running out. As Term 4 often coincides with the onset of hot weather, please supply your child with a water bottle which can remain at school during the week. Staying hydrated is an effective strategy for avoiding headaches and lethargy which often coincides with the onset of the hot weather. Furthermore, as we will be running the air-conditioners, it is a good idea for students to have a jumper they can put on if they sit in one of the classroom’s cold spots.
Until next term, Kath and Kathy.
Year 4/5 & 5 Capers
What a term it has been! We are all a little shocked that it is Week 10 already – though students have been working exceptionally hard to finalise assessment tasks, analyse their achievements and make learning goals for next term. We have a number of students who will be attending Band Camp for the remainder of the week and we hope they have fun! Students in 4/5 Scott and 5B will spend the remainder of the week consolidating their knowledge across all subjects, while focusing on building team working skills and independence. Students are also excited about building their Bug Hotels next term – if you would like to help, you can collect recycled, sustainable and natural materials that can be used to provide shelter for insects (bamboo sticks, shells, wood offcuts etc). If you have access to a lot of resources you would be willing to donate, please shoot an email to your class teacher! Any resources will be greatly appreciated.
We hope you all have a safe and happy holiday!
Cheers for now, Rebecca, Jessie & Janette.
Year 6 Capers
In Year 6 we can’t believe it’s the end of Term 3, which means we only have one more term of primary school left! Nearly everyone is ready for a break after a huge term of learning.
Everyone has given their opinion on whether Ned Kelly was a hero, villain or a victim; we all know how to read synoptic data from the TV weather report and how to prepare for a cyclone; and the passing of Queen Elizabeth had context in our classroom after learning about Australia’s System of Government this term. One of the toughest parts of the teachers’ year is over as well – choosing the finalists for Poetry Idol! Congratulations to all students who presented this year – in the classroom, in the semi-finals and in the hall for the finals! Well done to Harvey, Giacomo and Emily for doing us proud in the finals, and to Emily who was the 2022 Year 6 winner!
This week we have been finalising any outstanding assessment and consolidating concepts. Please encourage your students to keep reading over the holidays! The local library usually has fun school holidays activities scheduled. If you’re not a member of the library, you can sign up to be able to borrow all sorts of reading materials including books, comics and magazines, and to also be able to access reading apps which give you free access to e-books and audiobooks.
Have a lovely break and we look forward to hitting the ground running next term!

RUGBY 9s
Well done to all the boys and girls who have been playing in the Rugby 9s competition on a Wednesday night. It has been great to see more experienced players sharing their skills and knowledge so that newcomers can learn and enjoy the game. Thanks to all the parents who came along to coach and support.
ATHLETICS
Congratulations to Logan Wells, Charlise Bailey, Noah Higgins and Kyuss Barba who recently represented the Cassowary Coast in the Peninsula Athletics Trials at Barlow Park.
CRICKET BLAST CUP
A squad of 23 students represented our school at the Cricket Blast Cup last Thursday. There were 3 teams and each played 4 matches. Our squad consisted of very experienced players and beginners. The goal of the day was to have fun and learn, and after 4 games, all players had improved their skills and/or helped team mates to learn more about cricket.
Congratulations to Giacomo DeFaveri who recently attended Peninsula Trials as a member of the Cassowary Coast Team. Giacomo was selected in the Peninsula Team and is off to State Championships in September. We wish him all the best.
