Goondi SS Newsletter 22.06.22
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Report Cards
Report cards will be sent home this week. As always, you are encouraged to make an appointment with your child’s teacher if you wish to discuss any aspect of the report card. If the report card recommends an interview, then it is critical that you make every effort to contact your child’s teacher and make an interview appointment early next term.
“A” Key Students
At assembly on Friday, I will present a number of students in Years 1-6 with their Goondi 5 Exemplary Behaviour certificates for attaining an “A” key level. A huge congratulations to these students on a fantastic achievement. If your child is one of these role models, congratulate them and treat them to something special!
School Annual Report
Our 2021 school annual report will shortly be posted on the school website https://goondiss.eq.edu.au/ . Follow the link on the home page to download a copy of the report. The report provides a snapshot of school performance for the 2021 school year.
Athletics
On Friday, we held our 2022 Inter-House Athletics Carnival. This was a great day! A little rain in the early afternoon may have stopped the high jump events but it did not stop the enjoyment for our students.
Our students competed strongly and supported their peers with great enthusiasm. It was also great to see so many of our families there to support their children on the day. Thank you to our HPE teacher, Tiffanie Bulstrode, who ensured the day ran smoothly and that all participants had a great time.
Spell-a-thon
This Friday, we will be drawing the winning entries for the iPad prizes donated by our Goondi State School P&C. We look forward to this exciting annual event and wish everyone the best of luck in the draw.
If you can make it, we look forward to seeing you at the A Key/Spell-a-thon assembly on Friday. Finally, I would like to thank our parents and carers for their support of our fantastic school and look forward to a great Term 3.
Regards,
Peter Begemann
Principal

PREP ENROLMENTS FOR 2023
We are currently taking enrolments from new students and students who have brothers or sisters attending Goondi State School. Siblings will automatically be offered a place in our 2023 Prep classes.
We are also taking Expressions of Interest for children who live out-of-catchment and want to attend Goondi State School. If there are vacancies, these students will also be offered a place in our 2023 Prep classes.
Come to the office as soon as possible with your child’s details to complete an Expression of Interest form even if you are in-catchment. Our Pre-Prep program will begin in September.
SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at the school. School computers/tablets will be available.
SCHOOL RESUMES
Parents and carers are reminded that school resumes next term on Monday 11th July.
Term 3 is a 10-week term.
KEEP A WATCH ON OUR SCHOOL
During the school holidays we ask parents, carers, neighbours and students to keep a watch on our school. If you see anything suspicious call the School Watch hotline on 13 17 88. The School Watch Program is a partnership between the department and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in schools.
Prep Capers
The final week of term. Preps have worked so hard this semester and have been learning so much. We finished the term with sports day and all the students did well running for their team and then enjoyed some fun events in the prep area. A favourite was their own prep tug of war which was won by Geraldton.
Monday we visited Daradgee. This was a great day where the students got to experience the farm, including getting to see a chick start hatching from an egg. Roxanne, the coastal carpet python was a favourite among the students. There are lots of brave prep students who gave Roxanne a pat and were surprised at how her skin felt. This was a wonderful day for the students and will lead into their Term 3 learning.
Have a wonderful holiday and we look forward to continuing our learning in Term 3
The Prep team.
Year 1 Capers
Hello from Year 1! It’s the last week of school already! A big congratulations to our Year 1’s for their hard work and progress made throughout this semester.
In English, Week 9 and 10 has seen us focusing on creative writing using various stimulus. We worked hard making our monsters, made out of recycled materials and have been using these to inspire our creative writing. We were very impressed at the creativity shown when designing and decorating the monsters. Each student’s monster was unique and equally creative. Well done!
Congratulations to all Year 1’s on their Spell-a-thon results, we are very impressed with the amount of growth shown and hard work that went into learning all 100 words. In class, we have been honing in on phonics knowledge and practicing our ‘chopping up’ strategy. Keep practicing when reading over the holidays!
In Science, we tested our boats and were amazed at the amount of marbles that Year 1’s boats held. Students were very excited to test their boats and reflected on how they could make an even better boat next time.
In Geography, students presented their park design to their classmates and explained their choices. They picked an appropriate location for their park design to be built, using a map of Innisfail. Year 1 had fun with this and there were lots of carefully planned park designs that featured lots of fun and inclusive features.
Wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday.
Tayla, Leigh, Hayley and Fiona.
Year 2 Capers
Hello from Year 2! What a big term this one has been. I think everyone is grateful to see Week 10, as there has been a lot of hard work from our students lately. By now you should have your student’s report card, as these went home on Tuesday or Wednesday. If you have not gotten this, please contact the office to arrange collection. We would like to thank everyone for their participation through the reporting period.
You may receive a note home with some items that your student needs for school, such as pencils, whiteboard markers and erasers. If you do, and you could have these ready for the start of next term, it would be much appreciated. Having the right equipment allows for an easier time in class, as well as less wasted time searching for supplies. Some students may need extra items such as a hat, these parents and carers will be contacted directly.
As we close out this term we remain excited for Term 3, where we will be taking on even bigger challenges, such as coding using the Scratch program. While daunting at first, this can quickly become a fun activity that students enjoy.
Don’t forget our Spellathon assembly is Friday the 24th, where students will receive their medallions if they scored 100/100.
Thank you all for this term, and enjoy the break!
Nathan, Robyn and Jeanette.
Year 3 Capers
This week we say goodbye to Term 2 and are ready for a well deserved break. On reflection we have covered a lot of content and the students have worked hard. Effort ratings on report cards should show this also.
Now that reports are finalised, we are looking ahead to Term 3. Please check with your child, whether they need new stationery items to begin the term. Whiteboard markers are usually the most common requirement as we use these everyday.
Next term we begin Technology and will design, make and evaluate a pinball machine. There will be a letter sent home this week about recycled items to collect over the holidays for students to use on their creations.
We were very impressed with students’ HASS research tasks and some information presented ignited great class discussions. Hopefully your child has shared what they discovered with you.
Continue reading in the holidays to practise fluency and comprehension skills.
We wish everyone a safe holiday and we’ll see you after the break.
Until next time,
Donna, Janelle, Paula and Lizette.
Year 4 Capers
Continuing the journey of the First Fleet, students encountered violent storms aboard ship. Eventually after months at sea they reached Botany Bay where they encountered a whole new set of challenges in this strange land.
In Maths, students have been revising multiplication and division strategies. They have been practising the formal subtraction algorithm involving zeros and reviewing measuring length accurately using scaled instruments.
In Science, students have been applying their knowledge of materials and forces ready for our big Egg Drop Challenge this week.
In HASS we have been discussing the difference between Rules and Laws.
Congratulations to those students who have been following the Goondi 5 this term. Our celebration day is Wednesday and we will be watching Paper Planes and having our own paper plane competition.
We wish all students and their families a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing everyone back bright and refreshed next term.
Kathy Pike, Kath Long and Mel Lyons
Year 4/5 & 5 Capers
The last week of term is here and 4/5 Scott and 5B are super excited about camp! It has been a ridiculously busy end to the term and we are eager to get out into the open air and work as a team to tackle challenging tasks and experiences. A huge shout out to Donny and Chewy for volunteering as parent helpers!
Our Grade 4s aren’t missing out on all of the excitement! They will be spending the last three days of term with the other Grade 4 classes, celebrating their hard work and achievements with their peers.
4/5 Scott are also celebrating their hard work with a Pizza Party this week. The reward was awarded to them by Mr. Begemann and the Leadership Team and organised by the Student Council, celebrating their ability to work together and support each other’s’ learning during explicit lessons. Well Done 4/5 Scott!
Don’t forget to check out our work at the Innisfail Show!
Cheers for now, Rebecca, Jessie & Janette.
Year 6 Capers
Hello Year 6 families!
It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of Semester 1.
Students worked really hard the last two weeks to finish assessments and practise for the athletics carnival. Well done to everyone who did their best. Congratulations to all students who participated in Spellathon, and well done to everyone who scored 100% on the day.
Just in case you have missed it, Geraldton won the athletics carnival, but congratulations to every student who participated and helped to make the day a great success.
Next term we will continue working on those Maths concepts that students find difficult and read the book Black Snake in English to analyse the texts to decide whether Ned Kelly was a ‘hero’ or a ‘villain’. In Science we will be looking at how the earth changes and delve deeper into natural disasters. In HASS we will further investigate how governments function with a focus on the Australian system of government.
Thank you to all students who have been focusing on getting enough sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and bringing a healthy lunch to school, to make sure they are fully equipped for learning and assessment each day.
Thank you for your support!
Tjaart Richards, Melanie Worth and Janette McClelland.

The Arts News
It has been a wonderfully energetic term in The Arts with our students learning the importance of dance in many cultures and how it is used as important form of expression and storytelling. Highlights have included learning locomotive and non-locomotive movements that emphasise body control, strength and coordination. Our students in Year 5 & 6 explored Dance Landscapes and have particularly enjoyed learning the highly paced dance of the Bhungra due to its high energy movement and rhythmic style. The unit titled Wildlife Watch was thoroughly enjoyed by Year 3 & 4 as they worked collaboratively in exploring the movement of animals and interpreting this through body movements. Our Prep to Year 2 students loved taking on character roles and dancing using Nursery Rhymes. I wish all our Goondi community a happy and safe holiday and will see you all back next term for Visual Arts.

L.O.T.E News
Working individually and as classes, Years 5 and 6 students at Goondi State School are developing their Italian knowledge. Speaking, writing, listening to new words, phrases, sentences and questions in Italian is increasing their skill level in the language. Well done students!
Year 5 students have completed their oral assessment task. Students had scripted conversation with their Italian teacher and answered set questions. Year 6 students completed their written assessment task revising past work, including information on La mia giornata (My day). In this task, students have furthered their knowledge of Italian nouns, verbs and adjectives.
The bookwork standard shown in their exercise books follows school expectations. Feedback and assistance is given to students regularly. Encourage your child to speak Italian with you and discuss what they are learning.
Arrivederci (Goodbye)
