Goondi SS Term 3 Week 10
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a very busy Term 3, and our range of events have included Poetry Idol last Friday, district athletics earlier in the term, Children’s Book Week and ICAS. I have enjoyed my first term as Principal and look forward to continuing the journey in Term 4. Thank you to everyone who has made my first term warm and welcoming.
Poetry Idol took place in the hall on Friday morning. We were all so impressed by the performances of each of the finalists. There have been so many great recitals at each stage of Poetry Idol this term and I am glad that I am not one of the judges as this would be an almost impossible task! Thank you to Ms Green for her organisation of Poetry Idol and to our judges Mrs Long and Mrs Bulstrode.
The weather was kind to us last week as we completed our annual water safety awareness program for years 3, 4 and selected year 5/6 non swimmers. Thank you to those parents and carers who were able to come along and support the program. Years 1, 2 (including the 2/3 class) and the year 5/6 non swimmers will participate in the program in Week 9 of Term 4.
As we approach the school holiday period, please take a moment to prepare your child for Term 4. This could include the cleaning and washing of school bags and hats and purchasing any new stationery that may be required.
Wishing you all a safe and relaxing break, school will resume on Monday the 30th of September.
Regards,
Melissa Wieland
Principal

PARENT PICK UP and DROP OFF
Please be mindful of other road users when travelling along Maple Street. Recently, there was a minor traffic incident where a vehicle was hit by another user performing a u-turn in front of the staff car park driveway. Goondi SS is negotiating with the local council to install a single white line across this area to prevent users from completing a u-turn in this area. Motorists will need to continue along Maple Street as this area will be monitored by our local police once the white line is installed. Please help us to ensure risks are minimised and everyone can come and go safely to school.
SCHOOL RESUMES
Parents and carers are reminded that school resumes next term on Monday the 30th of September. Monday October 7th is a Public Holiday.
KEEP A WATCH ON OUR SCHOOL
During the school holidays, we ask parents, carers, neighbours and students to keep a watch on our school. If you see anything suspicious, call the School Watch hotline on 13 17 88. The School Watch Program is a partnership between the department and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in schools.

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of Term 3 already. The last two weeks have been busy with students showing us what they know in assessments. They have enjoyed making enclosures for farm animals out of recycled materials. There have been some interesting ideas shared on how they could fix problems on a farm like fixing fences, nets on trees and how to stop the animals eating all of the farmers veggie garden. It has been great to read the students information reports on chickens and share interesting facts about farm animals all term, the students and staff have all learned some amazing facts about animals on farms.
The students have had a great time this term showing their class buddies their special places at home. Tilly, Bluey and Cassy thank all the families for making them feel welcome and sharing their spaces.
We are looking forward to Term 4 and new learning experiences.
We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful holiday, getting some rest and relaxation ready for a great Term 4.

Year 1 Capers
Well we are at the end of yet another term and I know everyone is certainly looking forward to the holidays after a fast paced and hard-working term.
All students have finished writing their assessment tasks about bees and should feel very proud with the expert reports they have written. Everyone has certainly enjoyed learning about different insects this term and have become budding entomologists.
In Maths this week we are consolidating all concepts taught over the term with a focus on repeating patterns, fact families and number facts.
In Science, the students thoroughly enjoyed creating a diorama for their chosen insect. We were very impressed with the creativity and imagination shown to use every day objects such as pom poms, paddle pop sticks and cardboard to create insects. It’s amazing what a set of googly eyes can do to bring a collage insect to life!
As we prepare for the holidays, please check in with your child around what equipment they may need replenishing, ready for Term 4.
Have a great holiday!
Leigh, Steven and Fiona
Year 2 Capers
Hello from Year 2!
Congratulations everyone, we made it to Week 10. This is the last week of school before our two-week break, coming back on Monday, 30th September. We want to thank everyone for a great term, and we hope that everyone has an enjoyable holiday. We look forward to getting everyone back refreshed and ready for their final term of Year 2, where we will be tackling some new and exciting topics.
In Science, we will explore physical forces such as push and pull, and conduct experiments to learn about forces.
We will discuss the history of Innisfail in HaSS, and learn about some of the cyclones that have devastated our region. This topic provides opportunities for discussion at home, if you were around for Larry or Yasi. We will also discuss how to stay safe during cyclone season.
English sees us learning a new style of writing, the persuasive text. Students will be able to not only state an opinion, but back it up with reasons as well. This is a great skill for students to learn, and is fun to teach as well.
Stay safe over the holidays, and we will see you for a new adventure in Term 4.
Regards,
Kathy Pike, Tayla Vandal and Jeanette Spataro.
Year 3 Capers
As we near the end of the term, our assessment period is coming to a close. In writing, we are finalizing the last drafts of our information reports on New Zealand, focusing on the key skills of drafting, editing, and handwriting.
In Maths, we are completing assessments, including our number and location tests.
A big congratulations to our Poetry Idol finalists for their outstanding efforts!
We also had a fantastic time during swimming last week, and it was wonderful to see how much the students have improved.
Throughout the week, we will be sending home stationery slips for students needing replenishments for next term. Additionally, hats will be sent home—please ensure they are washed over the holidays and returned on the first day of Term 4.
Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday! We look forward to seeing you refreshed and ready for Term 4.
Have a great holiday,
Ashley, Janelle, Indigo, and Amanda
Year 4 Capers
As we approach the end of another wonderful term, it’s crucial that every student attend school regularly. Attendance plays a significant role in completing assessments and ensuring a smooth transition into the new term. Please ensure your child attends school each day this week to finish strong!
We kindly remind all families to return any library books that may be at home. This helps us keep our library organized and ready for the new term. Please check at home and return any outstanding books to the library by end of the term. As we prepare for the upcoming term, please check your child’s stationery supplies. They may need additional items such as pencils and an eraser. Ensuring they have all the necessary materials will help them start the new term prepared and ready to learn. We are in the final stretch of assessments, and we appreciate your support in encouraging your child to complete their work and prepare for any remaining tests. Your encouragement at home can make a big difference.
Stay tuned for information about the upcoming term. We will share important dates, events, and updates as we prepare for an exciting new term ahead.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation throughout the term. We wish everyone a restful and enjoyable break and look forward to welcoming students back for another great term!
Kind regards,
Miss Jade Reitano and Mrs Jenna Sulter
Year 5 Capers
Welcome to Week 10 in Grade 5!
We are busy finishing everything off for the term as we approach holidays. Looking back, we have had a term full of fun and success. Students have created very detailed animations and had a lot of fun doing it. It has been very busy with swimming last week to try to complete all of our assessments.
As we head into Term 4, please ensure students have enough pencils, whiteboard markers, erasers, working headphones and any other equipment that we use on a daily basis.
We hope everyone has a fun, refreshing and safe break! One term to go before Christmas holidays!
The year 5 team,
Kayla Hutchins, Rebecca Nolan and Rhonda O’Brien.
Year 6 Capers
What an exciting term it has been. We can’t believe it’s the end already, and there’s only one term to go. Some of our students are feeling better about the transition to High School, after we focussed on changes in our Health unit, however these feelings are still there, and still valid. Next term may get worse as we get closer, so if your learner is showing any major signs of anxiety, please stay in touch so that we can work through this together. We also saw a lot of sickness in Term 3, so we wanted to congratulate students that worked hard to catch up on assessments that they may have missed.
Next term will probably fly by, with assessment starting slightly earlier than usual to ensure all marks are finalised for a final Year 6 report card. We will stay in touch with when this starts, so that everyone is ready. Next term also sees us with some new study areas, such as Science, where we will talk about the matter that makes up the world around us, and how this matter can change forms.
In English we will move onto a new novel, called Boy Overboard, which ties in with our HaSS unit about the movement of people around the world.
Our excellent work in Maths will continue, with a focus on consolidating what we have already learned to leave Year 6 with the best result possible.
We hope all of our students have a relaxing and restful break, and we look forward to taking the final steps on their primary school journey when we return for Term 4.
Nathan Worth, Melanie Worth, and Anita Knight.
